What Kind of Apples To Use In This Treat?

Any kind that you like! Personally, I like to start with at least 1 granny smith, as this gives a slight tartness, Next up is a pink lady, super sweet and crisp will soften down to a perfect exture for pie. You could always do all the same apples or just some canned pie filling if you’re running short on time!

When is the best time to make Apple Pie?

Anytime you’re in the mood! But, fall time is when I make these as it gives the warm homey flavors with a fun factor. These are great for on the go as well!

Wrapping the filling in the Wonton Wrappers.

To fill each little “apple pie” wonton, you are going to want about 1-2 teaspoons of filling right in the middle of your wrapper, holding it at and angle. Now use just a little bit of water to seal the edges and press together or fold in one of these adorable dumpling maker molds if you have round or homemade wonton wrappers. These are great to really help on the crimping and shaping if you are going to be using the square shape and want to crimp them. If you’re in a rush or don’t want to clean another tool, you can always just pinch the edges together like I did for this recipe.

Frying the Apple Pie Wontons

You’ll want to add a little drizzle of oil in the pan, not a lot, just a little! I like to use coconut oil as it does not have any flavor, thus changing the taste of these little treats! Once the oil is hot, lay a few of these flat in the oil and give it about 1 minute. Watching ever so carefully as you don’t want these to burn! As soon as they start to turn brown and crispy, flip them over and fry the other sides. We don’t need water for this recipe since we are wanting crispy crunchy pie bites. Once done, place them on a paper towel lined plate to drain the excess oil off. Serve warm with a nice side of vanilla ice-cream or a big glass of milk!

  1. Making The Filling

Start by peeling the apples and chopping them up into 1/2 inch pieces. Place into a pot with just enough water to cover the apples and boil for 5-10 minutes. Once soft, drain the water out, turn heat to low, add in your butter, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Next, take 2 tablespoons of water and mix well with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and pour back into your pot. This will thicken all the juices together and give you a nice thick syrup on your apples. Allow this to simmer for 2- 3 minutes until just thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and place into a glass bowl.

  2. Frying The Apple Pie Wontons

To finish up, take your wonton wrappers and place about 1 teaspoon of filling into them. Rub water across the edges and pinche together to form a seal. Pour just enough oil in a pan to coat the bottom and turn the heat to medium. Once hot, lay your mini pies flat until they are brown and crispy, flip over and repeat. This is very quick so keep and eye on them. Serve with your favorite breakfast!
